The American Civil War Research Database contains over 95,000,000 datapoints covering the military records of over 4.2 million soldiers as listed in the states' Adjutant-General's Reports and Index to Service Records. Our work is currenly being accessed over 40,000 times every day. The Database contains few Navy records. Check the 'Data Field'chart below for a listing of information supplied by each state. We have invested over 90,000 hours during 18 years to reach this milestone and anticipate nearly 90,000 more hours of work before the database is "complete". Our goal is to include every soldier with as much information as possible - if the data is available - we do not publish a work schedule. We are progressing as quickly as we can. Please do NOT subscribe in anticipation of work not yet complete.
The American Civil War Research Database is generally updated quarterly. With each update we include new soldiers as well as any additional information we receive about soldiers already in the database. The exact number of new soldiers entered each update will vary based on the detail and complexity of the information we are working with.
Progress on entering information on CSA soldiers is slower than for Union soldiers. The reasons for this are threefold:
- method of record keeping,
- media the records are kept on, and
- availability of records.
